CEC requirements for hot tubs — Rule 68-064
Hot tubs (permanently installed spas) are regulated under Section 68 of the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC C22.1-21). Rule 68-064 sets out the wiring requirements: dedicated circuit, GFCI protection, a disconnect switch within sight of the tub, and bonding of all metal parts.
Unlike a plug-in spa that runs on a standard 120V outlet, a permanently installed hot tub requires a new 240V circuit run from the main panel, a double-pole GFCI breaker, and an outdoor disconnect switch. This work requires a licensed electrician and an electrical permit in all Canadian provinces.
Circuit sizing — breaker and wire gauge
Always use the MCA (Minimum Circuit Ampacity)from the hot tub's data label — not the wattage or a rough estimate. The MCA is the minimum ampacity the circuit must be designed for. The breaker must be sized at 125% of the MCA because hot tubs are continuous loads (CEC Rule 8-104).

GFCI protection and disconnect switch
GFCI: A GFCI circuit breaker is mandatory for all hot tub circuits. This must be a 2-pole GFCI breaker in the main panel — a GFCI outlet or GFCI receptacle cannot provide protection for a 240V circuit. The GFCI trips at 5 mA of imbalance between line and neutral, protecting against electrocution in wet environments. This is a non-negotiable CEC requirement.
Disconnect switch: CEC Rule 68-064(4) requires a readily accessible disconnect switch that is within sight of the hot tub, located between 1.5 m and 3 m from the hot tub edge, and not reachable from anyone in the water. A weatherproof outdoor shutoff box with a properly rated switch satisfies this — it must be rated for the circuit amperage and marked for outdoor use.
Permit and inspection
An electrical permit is required in all Canadian provinces for a hot tub installation. The permit must be obtained before work begins. After the installation is complete, an electrical inspection is required before the hot tub is energized and used.
Installing a hot tub without a permit voids the manufacturer's warranty, may void your homeowner's insurance for fire or electrocution claims, and can create liability issues if the property is ever sold. The inspection fee is typically included in the permit cost ($100–$200 depending on province).
Bonding and grounding
All metal parts of the hot tub — the shell reinforcement, water, pump motors, and any metal within 1.5 m of the water — must be bonded together with a minimum 6 AWG copper bonding conductor (CEC Rule 68-064(5)). Bonding equalizes voltage between all metal parts to prevent shock, even if a GFCI trips. This is separate from the equipment grounding conductor in the circuit wiring.
